How It All Started
If you are here looking for tankless water heater information, you are in the same spot I was in two years ago. I had just returned from a trip to Italy and had seen how modern day appliances could fit in with the charm of 200 year old architecture. It’s not easy retro-fitting anything in a building that has 2’ thick solid masonry walls. Since then I have done a lot of research that should make it easy for anyone to understand how a tankless hot water heater works. This is important because, despite the lavish claims, tankless water heaters are not always the best solution. As an example: at some point it is cheaper to buy a storage tank style heater because a tankless will wear out before you ever recoup your costs. Perhaps I was lucky to get it right the first time. The installation cost was no more than a standard water heater and the monthly bill is about 19-20 percent less. Having simple needs and fairly good handiman skills had something to do with it. There are three factors that determine what is the best choice: cost of utilities, climate and your need for hot water. These three make everyone’s situation a little different. Whether you choose tank or tankless; gas or electric, there are pros and cons with each. You might as well jump in, it's not likely to get any easier or cheaper. I take that back, as the market grows there will be more trained professionals that can do the math and install it for you. But if you are ready to go green now and to have a never ending supply of hot water then definitely go tankless. Ryan Fletcher
