How to fit a whole house tankless water heater into your brain
Adding a thermal blanket to a hot water tank or adding insulator sleeves to the pipes wherever they are accessable is about as much as a homeowner can do.. Buying a new whole house tankless water heater is a little more complicated than buying a storage tank type heater. Just reading up on EnergyStar ratings and checking for the lowest price is not enough. Even though conventional heaters are now padded with more insulation to give them a higher energy rating they not a bargain for today’s homes, even though they may be relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Take energy efficiency. Currently an electric tankless water heater is rated at 95 to 99 percent energy efficient. That’s because almost all the energy goes to heat the water. In fact the box itself is barely warm to the touch. The tank electric is a close second at 90-95 percent efficient (it may be heating water when it‘s not needed but it‘s doing it efficiently, compared to gas powered heaters). While the gas water tank is at the bottom at 60-65 percent efficient. Forty percent or more of the burned fuel is wasted. The cost of energy and how efficiently it can be burned will soon be the big issue we face. For whole house tankless water heater systems this is something that comes with a range of price tags, some sweetened by government incentives. This tankless way of heating water is pretty new stuff, so some of the solutions are a mix of old and new ideas.
